Landmark U.S. $4.5 Billion Louisiana Blue Hydrogen Clean Energy Complex

Air Products will invest $4.5B to build-own-operate the world’s largest blue hydrogen production facility, producing over 750 MMSCFD of blue hydrogen in Louisiana, USA. A portion of the blue hydrogen will be compressed and supplied to customers by our U.S. Gulf Coast pipeline network; the balance will be used to make blue ammonia that will be transported around the world and converted back to blue hydrogen for transportation and other markets.

The megaproject will also capture over five million metric tons per year of CO₂, making it the largest carbon capture for sequestration facility in the world. Numerous studies have shown that Louisiana’s geology is some of the best in the world for permanent geologic sequestration.

The project is expected to be operational in 2026.

Finding New Sources of Helium

Our one-of-a-kind helium production facility located in Doe Canyon, Colorado, uses cutting edge technology, combined with world-class operations, to extract and produce helium. Air Products extracts the helium from the gas stream and returns the carbon dioxide to Kinder Morgan CO2 for its intended enhanced oil recovery (EOR) use. Kinder Morgan CO2 supplies this carbon dioxide to the Permian Basin in West Texas, where it is used for EOR.   

Air Products' Doe Canyon helium production facility is the only plant in the world extracting helium from a gas stream composed primarily of carbon dioxide. The helium from this facility strengthens and diversifies our helium supply chain to further enable the reliable delivery of product to our customers around the world.

Supporting Our Customers

The MyAirProducts℠ mobile application and web portal is a one-stop shop for all of our customers' needs, enabling them to track their cylinder inventory, find key documents, and place orders online. We also offer Air Products Process Intelligence, which employs sensors and wireless communications technology that enables customers to monitor key process parameters, helping them improve efficiency, lower gas use, and reduce downtime in their operations.

Improving Our Performance

We are using novel computational and digital technologies—such as advanced modeling; data sciences including, Machine Learning; and real-time optimization—to drive step-change productivity. For example, we monitor ~400 operating plants around the world through our internally developed and patented ProcessMD™ platform. Using advanced analytics and modeling, ProcessMD enables us to operate efficiently in real time, reduce power consumption, increase production, and reduce vent losses. We also use monitoring and analytics on the road to enhance the safety and performance of our drivers.
