Landmark U.S. $4.5 Billion Louisiana Clean Energy Complex

There is a growing market interest in low-carbon intensity products, and Air Products has made a strategic decision to develop CCS as a core competency. The proposed project will capture and sequester 95 percent of the process facility’s CO2 emissions, with over five million tons per year (MTPY) of CO2 permanently sequestered in Louisiana. Gov. John Bel Edwards has announced Louisiana intends to reduce GHG emissions to net-zero by 2050 while consecutively preserving the state’s economic competitiveness. This project helps move toward achieving both of those goals.

Numerous studies have shown that Louisiana’s geology is some of the best in the world for permanent geologic sequestration. Louisiana has a highly trained, skilled workforce capable of constructing and operating permanent geologic sequestration projects and the necessary associated infrastructure.

Air Products' Blue Hydrogen Energy Complex

Expected onstream in 2026, Air Products’ blue hydrogen energy complex will make Louisiana a leader in the U.S.’ clean energy transition. Supporting the state’s ambitious climate, energy, and economic competitiveness goals, the complex will produce over 750 million standard cubic feet per day of blue hydrogen for Air Products’ pipeline customers in the U.S. Gulf Coast and blue ammonia for global hydrogen markets, including transportation/mobility. The project will also be the world’s largest carbon capture for sequestration operation, permanently sequestering >5 MTPY of CO2.

Air Products is excited to announce this investment in clean energy with the Governor of Louisiana. This landmark megaproject will not only create jobs but make Louisiana and Ascension Parish leaders in the U.S. clean energy transition. Air Products is fully invested in and committed to projects that leverage our build-own-operate, technology, financial, and sustainability capabilities, and this project brings all of those core strengths together.

Air Products' Chairman, President & CEO

This is a major industrial investment that will create quality manufacturing jobs while limiting environmental impacts, a goal envisioned by my Climate Initiatives Task Force. Carbon capture and sequestration are important to Louisiana’s efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while maintaining jobs and growing our manufacturing base. This project is a clear demonstration of our ability to grow the Louisiana economy while lowering the carbon footprint of industry.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards

Ascension Parish is committed to being a leader in the new clean energy economy and values our continued relationship with Air Products. We appreciate their investment in industrial gas production using carbon capture and sequestration technology. This project will not only make a significant investment in our parish but will also add high-quality employment opportunities for the residents in our community.

Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment

The development of this large-scale clean hydrogen project highlights our strategic geographic assets as we position ourselves to become the clean energy capital of the U.S. Gulf Coast. Investments from companies like Air Products are essential to reducing carbon pollution in a major and sustainable way.

Kate MacArthur - President and CEO of the Ascension Economic Development Corporation

The Capital Region is at the leading edge of the transitional energy sector, and Air Products’ decision to build one of the world’s largest low-carbon hydrogen projects here underscores that the talent, infrastructure, and business climate is turn-key for clean energy investments of a global scale. We congratulate our partners in Ascension Parish and look forward to working together to support Air Products.

Adam Knapp - President and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Chamber

Analysis from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and dozens of other organizations conclude that carbon capture, use, and storage (CCUS) is essential to achieve important climate targets, including 2°C, let alone 1.5°. Without CCUS most models do not converge on a solution at all.
